The router market is ever-growing, and has really pushed forward with recent technologies. Wireless AC second generation is great, but comes with its own problems as with any new technology. So one might ask why would I buy an older router. Different price points can serve many different needs. Some major differences are going to be their chip platform and antenna functionality.
The R7800 unit measures 1.97 by 11.22 by 7.26 inches, contains removable antennas, and takes full advantage of MU-MIMO (This stands for Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) out of the box. This router sports a 4×4 antenna configuration that permits 800 Mbps on the 2,4 GHz band, and 1733 Mbps on the 5GHz band. This router also supports up to 160 MHz of bandwidth. The beamforming technology was early adopted for this router, but has since gotten better with current firmware updates. This router will definitely deliver the speeds desired for medium to large homes.
The front contains ten small LED indicators that show you the status of the various ports. The rear of the router has four Gigabit LAN ports, WAN port, a button that disables/enables LED lights, Power button, and rest button. Netgear offers easy setup and configuration procedures for this router. After connecting the router to my network I was up and running in minuets. The Netgear Genie management systems makes it even easier to use for people trying to set up a router for the first time. It goes through necessary steps to gain internet access. Once connected you can then configure your wireless settings as needed. Netgear also offers Advanced configuration for more experienced customers.
The Nighthawk X4 sports a Dual-Core CPU that helps streamline QoS and traffic. You will have no problems streaming 4K or playing the latest online games. I was able to test this router using multiple game systems and streaming 4k content at the same time. I ran into no issues of stuttering or lack of performance. To test this router I used several ways to transfer files back and forth. Performance is solid for throughput tests. I’m not providing exact numbers because it varies and you are limited to your internet connection. I did manage to have full network saturation at all times. My Time Warner connection took full advantage of the this routers capabilities.
The R7800 is a capable choice for users who a ready to take advantage of MU-MIMO technology. It is definitely user friendly and offers fantastic performance for the price. Aside from the recently released X8 this router had the best performance I’ve seen. The bandwidth for the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz range is also impressive. If you’re looking for the best implementation for MIMO Netgear is the answer. They have definitly improved upon their Nighthawk line of routers every time a new one is released, and this is no exception. You can purchase this router on Amazon right now for $ 249.99.
